Mason’s Story
Mason Lee Mileham was born December 18, 2015. His first 3.5 years was just as every parent envisions their child’s life will be, happy and healthy. On November 18th, 2019, Mason began experiencing headaches and nausea that would lead us to the pediatrician’s office for an appointment. During this exam, the doctor noticed a bump on Mason’s head and ordered a CT scan for later that day. This scan would reveal multiple tumors on his skull and they quickly arranged to transfer Mason from Deaconess Midtown ER to Riley Children’s Hospital. He spent the night in the emergency room undergoing numerous scans and tests that led to a diagnosis 24 hours later of Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, the words that forever changed our life.
Mason spent the next 2.5 years at Riley Children’s Hospital and Levine Children’s Hospital fighting for his precious life. In April 2021, he suffered a relapse in his Central Nervous System making his treatment more difficult and complex. Despite the difficulty of this disease and treatment, Mason never let it define him living every moment with an intensity few could match. He squeezed in as much activity, conversation, and laughter as he possibly could. He spent his life enjoying sports, playing with cousins and friends, riding dirt bikes and four wheelers and going on family vacations. When Mason was inpatient, his nurses and child life staff would fill the gaps of missing his family and friends. They provided so much love, care, activity, and entertainment during treatment and we are forever grateful to them.
On April 19, 2022, after an incredibly brave battle against a very unforgiving disease, Mason lost his fight. Although his time with us was so very short, Mason was loved immensely, and it was an honor for all who witnessed the life and the fight of such a beautiful soul.
